tvrdnja

Tvrdnja is a noun used in Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian to mean an assertion, claim, or proposition. It denotes a statement that is presented as true and can be evaluated for truthfulness or justification. The word is derived from the verb tvrditi, “to claim” or “to affirm,” with the noun-forming suffix -nja. In everyday speech, tvrdnja can describe any claim someone makes, while in formal or scholarly contexts it often refers to the content of a proposition within an argument or a logical sentence that can be tested.

Tvrdnja can express a fact-based assertion as well as normative or value-laden statements. For example, “Tvrdnja da je Zemlja okrugla” is a factual claim about the shape of the Earth, whereas “Tvrdnja da je zaštita okoliša prioritet” expresses a value judgment about priorities. The term thus covers a broad range of utterances that assert something about the world, actions, or norms.

In linguistic and logical discussions, tvrdnja is contrasted with other terms such as izjava (an utterance or declaration) and propozicija (proposition). In logic and critical thinking, a tvrdnja is the kind of sentence that can be true or false and may be examined through evidence, argument, or proof. Not all tvrdnje are equally easy to verify, but their veracity or justification is a primary concern in rational discourse.
