The basic principle of operation involves a spring-loaded or weighted disc or poppet that seals an opening in the system. As pressure builds within the system, it exerts force on the disc. When this force overcomes the opposing force of the spring or weight, the disc lifts, opening the vent and allowing the excess fluid or gas to escape. Once the pressure drops to a safe level, the spring or weight forces the disc back into its seat, resealing the system.
