Tuottajajärjestelmä, known in English as a producer responsibility system, is an environmental policy approach where producers are given significant responsibility for the environmental impacts of their products throughout their lifecycle, particularly during the post-consumer phase. This means that manufacturers, importers, and distributors are expected to manage the collection, recycling, and disposal of their products once consumers have finished using them. The primary aim of these systems is to promote more sustainable product design, reduce waste, and increase the rate of material recovery and recycling.

In practice, producer responsibility can be implemented in various ways. Producers might be required to establish and fund their own take-back schemes, or they may join a collective producer organization or a compliance scheme that manages these responsibilities on their behalf. These schemes often operate on a fee-for-service basis, where producers pay according to the quantity and type of products they place on the market. The revenue generated is then used to fund the infrastructure and operations necessary for managing end-of-life products, such as collection points, sorting facilities, and recycling plants.

The scope of producer responsibility systems varies by region and product category. Common examples include systems for packaging, electronics, batteries, vehicles, and textiles. Regulations typically specify the targets for collection and recycling that producers must meet. By internalizing the costs of waste management into the product's lifecycle, producer responsibility systems aim to incentivize producers to design products that are more durable, repairable, and easier to recycle, thereby contributing to a circular economy.
