Tuntoärsykkeet, often translated as tactile stimuli or somatosensory input, refer to the signals received by the body's touch receptors. These receptors are distributed throughout the skin and in internal organs, allowing us to perceive a variety of sensations. They are a crucial part of the somatosensory system, which also includes proprioception (body position sense) and nociception (pain sense).

There are several types of mechanoreceptors that respond to different kinds of touch. For instance, Meissner's corpuscles are highly sensitive to light touch and changes in texture, playing a role in detecting movement across the skin. Merkel cells are also sensitive to light touch and sustained pressure, contributing to our ability to feel shapes and edges. Pacinian corpuscles are specialized for detecting deep pressure and vibrations. Ruffini endings respond to sustained pressure and skin stretch.

These receptors convert physical pressure, vibration, or stretch into electrical signals that are transmitted along nerve fibers to the spinal cord and then to the brain. In the brain, these signals are processed in the somatosensory cortex, allowing us to consciously perceive and interpret touch. This sensory information is vital for everyday activities such as grasping objects, navigating our environment, and experiencing social interactions. It also plays a significant role in motor control and the regulation of bodily functions.
