Tumorgebonden is a term used in oncology to describe molecules, cells, or agents that become bound to, or localized within, tumor tissue. Derived from the Swedish words tumör (tumor) and bunden (bound), the term emphasizes selective interaction with the tumor as opposed to normal tissues. In literature, tumorgebonden may refer to both endogenous components that attach to the tumor and administered compounds designed to target tumors.

Binding mechanisms include affinity interactions with tumor-associated antigens or receptors expressed on cancer cells, interactions with components of the tumor microenvironment (such as extracellular matrix proteins), and physical processes such as the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect that allow nanoparticles and macromolecules to accumulate in solid tumors. The binding can be transient or long-lasting, depending on the molecular design (for example, antibody-antigen interactions, ligand-receptor pairs, or covalent attachments).

Applications: In diagnosis, tumorgebonden probes are used in imaging to visualize tumors (e.g., radiolabeled antibodies, fluorescent tracers). In therapy, tumorgebonden agents include antibody-drug conjugates, radiopharmaceuticals, and targeted nanoparticles intended to deliver cytotoxicity to cancer cells while limiting exposure to healthy tissue. Research uses the concept to study pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and tumor targeting efficiency.

Limitations include tumor heterogeneity, variable antigen expression, and potential off-target binding. While common in Swedish oncology discourse, tumorgebonden is not a formal, universal classification and may be described with more precise terms in other languages.
