Tryckaltituden, often translated as pressure altitude, is a concept used in aviation and meteorology. It represents the height in the standard atmosphere corresponding to a given air pressure. The standard atmosphere is a theoretical model that defines atmospheric conditions at various altitudes, including pressure, temperature, and density. Essentially, pressure altitude is the altitude indicated when the altimeter is set to the standard sea-level atmospheric pressure of 1013.25 hectopascals (hPa) or 29.92 inches of mercury (inHg).

This value is independent of actual atmospheric conditions like temperature or humidity. When an aircraft's altimeter is set to this standard pressure setting, the altitude it displays is the pressure altitude. This is crucial for pilots because aircraft performance is directly affected by air density, which in turn is largely determined by pressure. High pressure altitudes (meaning low actual pressure, often associated with higher actual altitudes or warmer temperatures) result in lower air density, which can reduce engine power, propeller efficiency, and aerodynamic lift.

Pressure altitude is a fundamental value used in calculating other important aviation metrics, such as true altitude, density altitude, and true airspeed.
