Tristímulos refers to the three primary colors of light that can be mixed to create a wide range of other colors. These are typically red, green, and blue, a system known as RGB. When these three colors of light are combined in varying intensities, they stimulate the cone cells in the human eye, which are responsible for color vision.

The concept of tristimulus is foundational to color science and has practical applications in various fields. In display technology, such as televisions and computer monitors, pixels are made up of sub-pixels that emit red, green, and blue light. The tristimulus values are a way to quantify a color in terms of the amounts of three specific primary colors needed to match it. These values are often represented as X, Y, and Z. The Y component, in particular, is often used to represent luminance, or brightness.
