Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a microscopic parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It is one of the most common curable sexually transmitted infections globally. The infection most often affects the urethra in men and the vagina in women.

In women, symptoms can include itching, burning, redness, or discomfort in the genital area, and a change in vaginal discharge that may be thin or watery, frothy, and yellow-green in color with a strong odor. Some women may experience discomfort during urination or intercourse. However, many women with trichomoniasis have no symptoms at all.

In men, the urethra is typically infected. Most men with trichomoniasis do not have symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include irritation or inflammation inside the penis, mild discharge from the penis, or discomfort when urinating or ejaculating.

Trichomoniasis is spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, oral, and anal sex. It is diagnosed through a physical exam and laboratory tests, such as a microscopic examination of discharge or a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT).

The infection is treated with prescription antibiotics, usually metronidazole or tinidazole, taken orally. It is important for both sexual partners to be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. Condoms can help reduce the risk of transmission. Untreated trichomoniasis can increase the risk of getting or spreading other STIs, and in pregnant women, it can lead to premature birth or low birth weight.
