The trekstang, or drawbar, is the front structural member of a trailer or caravan that extends from the frame to the hitch at its end. It serves as the primary connection between the trailer and the towing vehicle and forms the forward portion of the trailer’s undercarriage.

Functionally, the trekstang transfers the pulling force from the towing vehicle to the trailer and helps keep the vehicle and trailer aligned during movement. It also provides mounting points for essential components such as the coupling, safety chains, electrical connectors, lighting, and braking lines, and it influences the trailer’s stability and turning behavior.

Construction and variants vary, but trekstangen are typically made of steel or aluminum and come in different cross-sections, such as round tubes or box sections. They can be rigid or, in some designs, detachable to aid storage. The end of the trekstang holds the coupler and other fittings needed to attach to the towing vehicle, and it may include mounts for safety features and wiring channels.

Maintenance and safety considerations include regular inspection for cracks, corrosion, deformation, or loose mounting bolts. Proper hitch height and tongue weight should be maintained to ensure stable handling. Before use, the coupling should be tested, safety chains checked, and electrical and braking connections verified.

Standards and terminology vary by region. The term trekstang is common in the Netherlands and Belgium; in other areas, the same component may be called a drawbar or tongue. Trailers use different coupling systems (such as ball or European 50 mm) that attach to the trekstang, governed by regional regulations on load limits and safety devices.
