Transsexuality is a term historically used to describe individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, and who often seek to transition medically and/or socially to align their outward appearance and social role with their gender identity. This term has largely been superseded by "transgender" in contemporary discourse, as "transgender" is considered a broader and more inclusive umbrella term encompassing a wider range of gender identities and expressions that differ from assigned sex.

The experience of transsexuality involves a deep-seated sense of gender identity that is not congruent with the sex assigned at birth. For some individuals, this incongruence causes significant distress, known as gender dysphoria. This distress can manifest in various ways, leading some to pursue medical interventions such as hormone replacement therapy and surgeries to affirm their gender identity. Social transition, which involves changing one's name, pronouns, and presentation to align with one's gender identity, is also a crucial aspect of the process for many.

The understanding and terminology surrounding gender identity have evolved considerably. While "transsexual" was once the primary term, "transgender" is now preferred by many as it acknowledges that not all individuals who experience gender incongruence identify with the "sexual" aspect of the older term and encompasses a wider spectrum of identities beyond a binary male/female transition. The focus today is on respecting individual identities and experiences, recognizing that gender is complex and personal.
