Transnatural is a term used in philosophy and cultural studies to describe phenomena that cross or blur the boundary between natural and artificial. The word, a portmanteau of “trans-” and “natural,” is employed in various discourses to signal a continuum rather than a strict dichotomy between what is considered natural and what is manufactured or technological. In some uses, transnaturalism denotes a framework for analyzing how technologies, living systems, and human bodies participate in hybrid, relational continuums.

In theoretical practice, transnatural refers to ontologies that reject rigid nature–culture dualisms and emphasize connections among organisms, technologies, environments, and infrastructures. Proponents argue that contemporary life—ranging from gene editing and prosthetics to artificial intelligence and climate intervention—exhibits transnatural hybridity, where boundaries are dynamic and context-dependent rather than fixed. The concept appears in posthumanist and technocultural debates, as well as in studies of science and technology, art, and speculative fiction.

Critics caution that the term can be vague or sweeping, and may risk masking material differences and power dynamics embedded in technoscientific practices. Some scholars prefer more precise analyses of specific domains—biotechnology, computation, environmental engineering—rather than a broad umbrella term.
