Translocating, or translocation, is the act of moving something from one location to another. In science, the term has several distinct uses across biology, medicine, and ecology.

In genetics, a chromosomal translocation is a structural rearrangement in which segments of chromosomes are exchanged or relocated to nonhomologous chromosomes. Translocations can be balanced, with no genetic material gained or lost, or unbalanced, which can disrupt genes and lead to developmental abnormalities. Some translocations generate gene fusions that drive cancer, such as the t(9;22) translocation creating the BCR-ABL fusion in chronic myeloid leukemia or the t(15;17) translocation in acute promyelocytic leukemia.

In cell and plant biology, translocation describes movement within cells or within organisms. Protein translocation refers to the import or export of proteins across membranes, including into mitochondria, chloroplasts, or the endoplasmic reticulum. In botany, phloem translocation is the long-distance movement of sugars, hormones, and other solutes from source tissues to sinks, driven by pressure flow; xylem transport is separate, moving water and minerals upward from roots.

In ecology and conservation, translocation is the deliberate relocation of organisms to new habitats to support population viability, restore ecosystems, or augment declined populations. Practices include disease screening, genetic management to avoid inbreeding, habitat assessment, and post-release monitoring. Translocation programs face challenges such as ecological risk, reduced fitness of released individuals, and unintended impacts on recipient ecosystems.
