In essence, it describes an action that is performed by a subject and affects an object. For example, in the sentence "Koira söi luun" (The dog ate the bone), "söi" (ate) is a transitive verb, and "luun" (the bone) is its direct object. The action of eating is transferred from the dog to the bone.
