Transistor stages are the individual amplifier sections built around transistors that are used to process and amplify electrical signals. In analog electronics, multiple stages are often cascaded to achieve greater gain, controlled bandwidth, and desired impedance transformation. Each stage typically includes a transistor, a biasing network to set the quiescent operating point, and coupling components to connect it to adjacent stages.

Common configurations describe how the transistor is biased and what function the stage serves. A common-emitter stage provides substantial voltage gain and signal inversion, and is a fundamental building block of many amplifiers. A common-collector stage, also known as an emitter follower, offers a high input impedance, low output impedance, and a voltage gain near one, suitable for buffering. A common-base stage features low input impedance and wide bandwidth, useful in certain RF designs.

Important design considerations include bias stability, which prevents drift with temperature, and the method of interstage coupling, such as capacitor coupling, transformer coupling, or direct coupling in DC-coupled designs. Impedance matching between stages affects gain and bandwidth. Feedback, either local within a stage or global around multiple stages, may improve linearity and stability but can reduce gain. Noise, distortion, and device parameters limit performance.

Transistor stages are used in many applications, from audio preamplifiers and power amplifiers to RF receivers and instrumentation amplifiers. In practice, designers trade off gain, bandwidth, noise, and stability to meet a target specification, often employing cascaded stages with careful biasing and coupling to achieve the desired overall response.
