transenzymes
Transenzymes are a class of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of chemical groups between molecules. This transfer process is fundamental to numerous biological reactions, including metabolism, DNA replication, and signal transduction. Typically, a transenzyme requires a coenzyme or cofactor to assist in the group transfer. The substrate molecule that donates the group is called the co-substrate, and the molecule that accepts the group is called the product. This reaction can be represented generally as A-X + B <=> A + B-X, where A-X is the co-substrate, B is the acceptor molecule, A is the released donor fragment, and B-X is the product.
Common examples of transenzymes include kinases, which transfer phosphate groups, and transaminases, which transfer amino groups.
