Transaktiointia, often translated as transaction processing, refers to the method of collecting, storing, processing, and retrieving data related to transactions. In a business context, a transaction is an event that affects the state of a business, such as a sale, a purchase, or a payment. Transaction processing systems are designed to handle these events efficiently and accurately.

The core principle of transaction processing is to ensure data integrity and consistency. This is typically achieved through the ACID properties: Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability. Atomicity ensures that a transaction is treated as a single, indivisible unit of work; it either completes entirely or not at all. Consistency guarantees that a transaction brings the system from one valid state to another. Isolation ensures that concurrent transactions do not interfere with each other. Durability means that once a transaction is committed, it will remain so even in the event of system failures.

Different types of transaction processing exist, including online transaction processing (OLTP) and batch processing. OLTP systems handle a large volume of short, fast transactions in real-time, such as those found in retail point-of-sale systems or banking applications. Batch processing, on the other hand, groups transactions together and processes them at a later time, often used for tasks like payroll or end-of-day reports.
