The tool records the time it takes for each packet to reach intermediate routers and be returned to the source. There are several variations of traceroute, often distinguished by the protocol they use or their operating system implementation. The original `traceroute` command is typically found on Unix-like systems (Linux, macOS). It commonly uses UDP datagrams. On Windows systems, the equivalent command is `tracert`, which primarily uses ICMP echo requests. Another variation, `mtr` (My Traceroute), combines the functionality of ping and traceroute into a single tool, providing a continuous and more dynamic view of network connectivity.
