Torrförgasning is a thermochemical process used to convert solid biomass or waste materials into a synthesis gas, also known as syngas. This syngas is primarily composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and some methane, along with smaller amounts of other gases. The process occurs in a fixed-bed reactor at high temperatures, typically between 700 and 900 degrees Celsius, and in the absence of or with very limited oxygen.

Unlike gasification processes that require a continuous supply of steam or oxygen, torrförgasning operates with minimal or no external oxidizing agent. The process relies on the inherent moisture content of the feedstock and a limited amount of internal combustion of the feedstock itself to provide the necessary heat. This makes it a relatively simple and potentially cost-effective method.

The products of torrförgasning can be utilized in various ways. The syngas can be cleaned and then used as fuel in internal combustion engines or gas turbines to generate electricity. It can also serve as a feedstock for the production of chemicals, such as methanol or ammonia, or for the synthesis of liquid fuels through processes like the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The solid residue remaining after torrförgasning is a char, which can be used as a soil amendment or as a solid fuel. The main advantages of torrförgasning include its ability to handle a wide range of feedstocks, its operational simplicity, and its potential for energy recovery and valuable product generation.
