torpare
Torpare is a historical term used in Sweden (and to a lesser extent in other Nordic countries) for a tenant farmer who lived and worked on a smallholding known as a torp. A torp was a modest dwelling with a small yard and typically a few hectares of arable land and pasture, attached to a larger estate or manor. The torpare was usually a free peasant who leased the land from the landowner, paying rent (arrende) and contributing labor or services to the estate as required.
Economic and social role: Torpare families cultivated the land to sustain themselves and to produce surplus
Historical context and decline: The torpare system gained prominence in early modern Sweden and remained common
Modern usage: Today the term is primarily historical and used to describe a former rural social class.
