Tornadosid is a phenomenon characterized by a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. These rotating columns are often referred to as a "twister" or "whirlwind." Tornadoes can vary greatly in size and intensity, from small, weak funnels that only disturb the ground to massive, violent storms capable of causing widespread destruction.

The formation of tornadoes is typically associated with severe thunderstorms, particularly supercells. These are thunderstorms that contain a deep, persistent rotating updraft known as a mesocyclone. The exact mechanisms by which a mesocyclone spawns a tornado are still an active area of research, but it is believed to involve complex interactions of wind shear, temperature gradients, and atmospheric instability.

Tornadoes are classified based on their wind speed and damage potential using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale. This scale ranges from EF0, representing minor damage, to EF5, indicating catastrophic destruction. Tornadoes are most common in the central United States, an area often referred to as "Tornado Alley," but they can occur in many parts of the world. Predicting the exact path and timing of a tornado remains a significant challenge for meteorologists.
