torjata

Torjata is a term used in a fictional flora to denote a small evergreen tree species native to the highland forests of the Neridan archipelago. It is treated as a monotypic genus, containing a single described species, Torjata montana.

Torjata montana grows to about 5–7 meters tall, with a slender trunk and a dense, umbrella-like crown. Leaves are opposite, simple, lanceolate to ovate, and deep glossy green. The small flowers are bisexual, pale yellow-green, arranged in loose panicles; fruits are ovoid drupes that ripen to a purple-brown.

The species is endemic to cloud-forest habitats at elevations roughly 900–1500 meters, preferring well-drained volcanic soils. It forms part of mixed-species forests and is drought-tolerant during dry seasons. Pollination is primarily by native solitary bees, while frugivorous birds disperse the seeds.

Torjata montana is used locally for light timber, craftwork, and a resin obtained from the bark. The leaves are employed in traditional medicine, and an essential oil isolated from the flowers is described in world-building references. In Neridan folklore, the tree symbolizes resilience and renewal. Conservation concerns include habitat loss from deforestation and climate change, with protected areas providing most of its remaining habitat.
