Toppdomänsservrar, often referred to as root name servers, are critical components of the Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure. They are the first servers queried when a user's computer attempts to resolve a domain name, such as www.example.com. There are 13 logical root name servers, though their physical presence is distributed globally across many locations.

When a DNS resolver on a user's computer needs to find the IP address for a domain name, it first contacts one of the root servers. The root server does not know the IP address directly, but it knows which servers are authoritative for the top-level domain (TLD), such as .com, .org, or .net. It directs the resolver to the appropriate TLD name server.

The TLD name server, in turn, knows which servers are authoritative for the next level of the domain name, in this case, the "example.com" domain. It then directs the resolver to the authoritative name server for "example.com". Finally, this authoritative name server provides the actual IP address for www.example.com, completing the resolution process. Without root servers, the hierarchical structure of the DNS would not function, making it impossible to navigate the internet using human-readable domain names. They are managed by various organizations worldwide, ensuring redundancy and resilience.
