Controversies can arise from renaming as expressions of identity, memory, or power, leading to ongoing debates about sovereignty, heritage, and inclusive usage.

Standardization and research: International and national bodies oversee consistent usage of geographical names for maps, encyclopedias, and official documents. Organizations such as the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names issue guidelines on transliteration, diacritics, and naming conventions.
