Calculation approaches vary. In practice, topicprominent scores can be derived from outputs of topic models such as latent Dirichlet allocation or nonnegative matrix factorization, using the topic distribution across documents and adjusting for document length and coherence. Dynamic or time-aware models may track how prominence changes over time.

Applications include content discovery, trend analysis, and automated summarization. By ranking topics by prominence, systems can prioritize topics for display, indexing, or alerting, and researchers can study shifts in discourse across domains.

Limitations involve dependence on corpus composition and topic granularity, potential biases in data, and interpretability challenges. Prominence is relative to the chosen model, vocabulary, and granularity, making cross-corpus comparisons nontrivial.
