Tootmisliin, which translates to "production line" in Estonian, refers to the arrangement of machines, tools, and workers along a production path that converts raw materials into finished products. A production line typically comprises a sequence of workstations connected by material handling systems such as conveyors, with quality checks at designated points. Lines can be dedicated to a single product or reconfigurable to produce several related products.

Layouts vary by purpose. Common configurations include straight lines, U-shaped lines, and cellular layouts where stations are grouped by product family. Line balancing aims to distribute work evenly among stations to minimize bottlenecks, with takt time used to align output with customer demand. Bottlenecks limit capacity and are targets for optimization.

Key elements include automation and robotics, standardized work, and controlled changeovers to reduce downtime. Performance is measured by throughput, cycle time, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). Safety, ergonomics, and quality control are integral to line design and operation.

Modern production lines increasingly incorporate digital technologies as part of Industry 4.0, including sensors, connectivity, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and digital twins for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and flexible reconfiguration.
