Tonzilitíd is the medical term for tonsillitis, an inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are two oval-shaped pads of tissue located at the back of the throat. They are part of the lymphatic system and help fight infection.

Tonsillitis is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or influenza. However, it can also be caused by bacterial infections, most notably Streptococcus pyogenes, which causes strep throat. Symptoms of tonsillitis can include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, swollen tonsils that may have white or yellow patches, and sometimes a rash. In children, other symptoms like earache or stomachache may also occur.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination and the patient's symptoms. A rapid strep test or throat culture may be performed to determine if a bacterial infection is present. Treatment depends on the cause. Viral tonsillitis typically resolves on its own and is managed with rest, fluids, and pain relievers. Bacterial tonsillitis, particularly strep throat, requires antibiotics to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation. In recurrent or severe cases, or when tonsillitis causes breathing problems or other significant issues, a tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the tonsils, may be considered.
