Tonsilleproblemer, also known as tonsillitis, refers to inflammation of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat. These tonsils are part of the immune system and help trap germs entering the throat. Tonsillitis is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, but can also be caused by bacterial infections, most notably Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep).

Symptoms of tonsillitis typically include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen, red tonsils. In some cases, white or yellow patches or streaks may be visible on the tonsils, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck may also be present. Bad breath can also be a symptom.

Diagnosis is usually made based on symptoms and a physical examination. A throat swab may be taken to identify a bacterial infection, which can help determine if antibiotics are necessary. Viral tonsillitis usually resolves on its own within a week or two. Bacterial tonsillitis may require a course of antibiotics.

While most cases of tonsillitis resolve without complications, severe or recurrent tonsillitis can sometimes lead to complications such as peritonsillar abscess (a collection of pus around the tonsil) or rheumatic fever, a serious inflammatory condition. In cases of frequent or severe infections, or if tonsillitis causes breathing difficulties or other significant problems, tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the tonsils, may be considered. Prevention primarily involves good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, to reduce the spread of infectious agents.
