Tongvekt, or tongue weight, is the downward force exerted by a towed trailer on the hitch of the towing vehicle. It is the portion of the trailer’s loaded weight that rests on the hitch and is a key factor in towing stability, braking, and steering.

Tongue weight is typically expressed as a percentage of the trailer’s gross loaded weight. A common guideline places tongue weight at about 10–15% of the trailer’s loaded weight, though ranges can vary by trailer type and manufacturer. In practice, this weight is often stated in pounds (lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on locale. For example, a 2,000 lb trailer would have a tongue weight of roughly 200–300 lb.

Measurement and estimation methods vary. A dedicated tongue weight scale or hitch-scale can measure the load directly at the hitch. Alternatively, scales placed under the hitch or at the trailer frame during loading can provide data, or approximate methods using known trailer weight and cargo distribution can be used.

Proper tongue weight is essential for safe towing. Too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and unstable handling; too much tongue weight can overload the hitch, reduce maneuverability, and affect braking and steering. Tongue weight must stay within the hitch’s rated tongue weight capacity and not exceed the towing vehicle’s or hitch’s GTW (gross trailer weight) limits.

Weight distribution within the trailer strongly influences tongue weight. Moving cargo toward the front of the trailer increases tongue weight, while placing weight toward the rear decreases it. Adjusting cargo placement within the recommended range is a common method to achieve correct tongue weight.
