tonernas

Tonernas is a Swedish sound-art collective focused on the intersection of music, space, and technology. Formed in Stockholm in 2010 by composers and sound artists Lena Bergström, Johan Hult, and Mikael Norén, Tonernas develops works that combine acoustic instrumentation with electronic processing and installation environments. The group works with site-specific pieces as well as concert performances, often integrating audience-driven elements and visual media.

Key projects include the installation Echo Chamber (2012) at Moderna Museet, the multimedia performance Resonant Fields (2014) at the Göteborg Opera House, and the immersive piece Field Notes (2016) which toured several European venues. Tonernas has released a self-titled debut EP in 2011, the LP Spectrums in 2013, and the LP Void and Voice in 2017. Their recordings emphasize timbre, spatialization, and minimalism, while live performances prioritize acoustics and audience perception.

The collective operates with a rotating roster of collaborators, enabling variable lineups for each project. Members have included Lena Bergström (synthesis, electronics), Johan Hult (sound design, field recordings), and Mikael Norén (guitar, processing), with guest artists from contemporary art and dance.

Tonernas is part of the Nordic experimental music scene and has participated in international festivals and artist residencies. The work is often described as contemplative and technically rigorous, exploring how sound shapes space and memory.
