Tomografinen refers to a method of imaging that involves creating cross-sectional slices of an object or body. The term itself is derived from the Greek words "tomos" meaning slice and "graphein" meaning to write. This technique allows for the visualization of internal structures in a way that conventional flat imaging methods, like a standard X-ray, cannot.

The fundamental principle behind tomographic imaging is the acquisition of multiple projection images from different angles around the object. These projections are then processed using mathematical algorithms, most commonly the filtered back-projection algorithm or iterative reconstruction methods, to reconstruct the internal structure as a series of two-dimensional slices. Each slice represents a specific depth within the object.

There are various tomographic imaging modalities, each utilizing different physical principles. Computed Tomography (CT) uses X-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fields and radio waves, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) use radioactive tracers. These technologies have revolutionized medical diagnostics, allowing for detailed examination of organs, tissues, and the detection of diseases. Beyond medicine, tomographic techniques are also employed in fields such as materials science, archaeology, and security for non-destructive analysis.
