A tomb chapel is a structure built over a tomb or a collection of tombs, often for the benefit of the deceased and their families. These buildings were commonly found in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as in other ancient civilizations.

In ancient Egypt, tomb chapels were known as "cachabats" or "mastabas," and were often built for high-ranking officials and pharaohs. These elaborate structures were designed to provide a comfortable and well-appointed residence for the deceased in the afterlife. Inside the chapel, shrines and altars were built to house the funerary texts, which were necessary for the soul's safe passage into the afterlife. The exterior walls of the tomb chapel were often adorned with elaborate reliefs depicting scenes of the deceased's daily life, their funerary rituals, and mythological scenes.

In contrast, the ancient Greeks built the tomb chapels, known as "heroon" or "tombe d'heroine," for prominent citizens and heroes. These structures often featured freestanding columns, friezes, and pediments, demonstrating the artistry of Greek architecture. Greek tomb chapels usually contained statues, frescoes, and other artworks, while Egyptian tomb chapels featured inscriptions, paintings, and reliefs.

Rome and other ancient civilizations constructed similar structures for their noble and aristocratic classes, often built near temples or city squares. These buildings typically contained elaborate funerary sculpture, paintings, and architectural ornamentation. While the purpose of a tomb chapel varied across cultures, its primary function remained the veneration of the deceased, providing comfort to the grieving families, and commemorating the importance of the individual or class the structure honored.
