Toimintapotentiaaliin refers to the concept of an action potential in neurobiology and physiology. It describes the rapid, transient change in the electrical potential across the membrane of a neuron or muscle cell. This electrical signal is fundamental to nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction.

The generation of an action potential is initiated when a stimulus causes the cell membrane's voltage to reach a critical threshold. This threshold triggers the opening of voltage-gated ion channels, primarily sodium channels. The influx of sodium ions rapidly depolarizes the membrane, making the inside of the cell more positive. Following depolarization, potassium channels open, allowing potassium ions to flow out of the cell. This efflux of potassium ions repolarizes the membrane, returning it to its resting potential, and can even lead to a brief hyperpolarization phase.

Action potentials are all-or-none events, meaning they either occur fully or not at all. The strength of a stimulus does not influence the amplitude of a single action potential, but rather the frequency at which action potentials are generated. This electrical signaling allows for the rapid and efficient communication between cells in the nervous system and is crucial for a wide range of bodily functions, including sensory perception, motor control, and cognitive processes.
