Toimialad are the Finnish plural form of toimiala, a term used in economics to denote an economic sector or industry. In Finnish statistics and business language, toimialat group companies by their primary line of business, rather than by size, ownership, or location.

They are used in official statistics, business registries, and policy analysis to describe and compare economic activity. Finland employs the Toimialaluokitus (TOL), a hierarchical classification system that organizes sectors from broad to detailed levels. This framework helps analysts measure contributions to GDP and employment, compare industries over time, and track sectoral developments.

Examples of common toimialat include maatalous ja metsätalous (agriculture and forestry), teollisuus (manufacturing), rakennusala (construction), kaupan ala (wholesale and retail trade), tieto- ja viestintäala (information and communications), terveydenhuolto ja sosiaalipalvelut (health care and social services), rahoitus- ja vakuutustoiminta (finance and insurance), koulutus (education), and taide, viihde ja kulttuuri (arts, entertainment and culture). These categories are used to summarize complex economic activity and to facilitate reporting and policy design.

Challenges arise because many firms operate across multiple sectors, and economic activities continuously evolve with technology and business models. Classification systems are regularly updated to reflect new activities and to maintain comparability with international standards such as NACE, ISIC, or NAICS, which helps enable cross-border statistics and analysis.
