A distillation column, also known as a fractionating column or a separation column, is a piece of industrial equipment used in various chemical processes to separate a mixture of substances into its component parts, or fractions, based on their different boiling points. This process, known as distillation, is fundamental in industries such as petroleum refining, chemical manufacturing, and alcoholic beverage production.

The core principle behind a distillation column's operation is the repeated vaporization and condensation of the mixture. The column is typically a tall, cylindrical vessel containing a series of trays or packing materials. These trays or packing provide a large surface area for intimate contact between the rising vapor and the descending liquid. As the mixture is heated at the bottom of the column, the more volatile components vaporize first. This vapor then rises through the column. As it ascends, it encounters cooler temperatures, causing it to condense. Simultaneously, a reflux stream, which is condensed liquid from the top of the column, is often returned to the top to improve separation efficiency.

At each tray or within the packing, a liquid-vapor equilibrium is established. The vapor becomes progressively richer in the lower-boiling-point components as it moves up the column, while the liquid becomes richer in the higher-boiling-point components as it moves down. By carefully controlling the temperature gradient and the reflux ratio, the desired components can be collected as vapor at different points in the column or as liquid at the top and bottom. Different types of distillation columns exist, including tray columns (bubble cap, sieve, valve) and packed columns, each with its own advantages for specific separation tasks.
