Tyrosinase, also known as monophenol monooxygenase, is a copper-containing enzyme responsible for the initial step in the production of melanin. Melanin is the pigment found in skin, hair, and eyes that provides coloration. The enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of L-tyrosine to L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), and further oxidation of L-DOPA to dopaquinone. This dopaquinone is a crucial intermediate that then undergoes non-enzymatic reactions to form other melanin precursors, ultimately leading to the diverse range of melanin pigments.
Tyrosinase is found in a variety of organisms, including mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, insects, and plants.
Due to its central role in pigment production, tyrosinase has become a target for research and commercial
