A tinderbox is a container, typically made of metal or wood, used to store tinder. Tinder is any readily combustible material that can be ignited by a spark, such as dry wood shavings, cotton, or char cloth. Historically, tinderboxes were essential for starting fires before the advent of matches. The contents of a tinderbox allowed for the safe and convenient transport of these flammable materials, protecting them from moisture and damage.

The typical tinderbox contained several key components. Alongside the tinder itself, a flint and steel were often included. The steel, a piece of high-carbon steel, was struck against the sharp edge of the flint, producing sparks. These sparks were then directed onto the tinder, which would smolder and glow. Once the tinder was glowing, it could be carefully transferred to a bundle of kindling and blown upon to produce a flame. Some tinderboxes also had a compartment for holding a candle or a small lantern to provide light. The design and materials of tinderboxes varied greatly depending on region and era, from simple pouches to elaborate decorated boxes. They played a vital role in everyday life for centuries, enabling cooking, heating, and light.
