Timeforskyvning, commonly known as time dilation, is a phenomenon described by Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, particularly special relativity. It refers to the difference in elapsed time between two observers either moving at different velocities or experiencing different gravitational potentials. According to this principle, time does not pass uniformly for all observers in the universe.

In special relativity, time dilation occurs when an object moves at a significant fraction of the speed of light relative to another observer. From the perspective of the stationary observer, time for the moving object appears to pass more slowly. This effect becomes more pronounced as the relative velocity increases. For example, astronauts traveling at high speeds in space may experience time passing slightly slower than those on Earth, though the difference is minimal at conventional speeds.

General relativity extends this concept by incorporating gravitational fields. Objects in stronger gravitational fields, such as those near a massive body like a black hole, experience time dilation compared to those in weaker fields. This means clocks at lower altitudes or near dense masses tick slower than those farther away. GPS satellites must account for this effect to maintain accurate timekeeping, as their elevated orbits experience slightly faster time due to weaker gravity.

Time dilation has been experimentally verified through precision measurements, such as atomic clocks on fast-moving aircraft or in orbiting satellites. These observations confirm that time is not absolute but relative to the observer’s frame of reference. The phenomenon also plays a role in astrophysics, influencing the study of black holes, neutron stars, and cosmic phenomena where extreme velocities or gravitational forces are present.
