tilepyramides

Tilepyramides are a family of tessellating tiles used in geometric tiling and decorative design. A tilepyramide is a polyhedral tile shaped like a pyramid whose base is a regular polygon and whose side faces are congruent isosceles triangles that meet at a single apex. In 3D tilings, many tilepyramides can be arranged so that their side faces coincide along shared edges, creating a periodic or aperiodic lattice of pyramidal units. In some realizations the base faces lie in a common plane and the apexes extend above it; in other realizations the tiles are used as elevated elements, producing a stepped relief.

Construction: Choose a base polygon P that can tile the plane by translation (for example a square or a regular hexagon). Build a pyramid over P with triangular faces meeting at apex. When tiling space, align adjacent tiles so that corresponding triangular faces coincide. The height of the pyramid determines the visual density and the angle defects around vertices. For square bases, a common height yields a uniform square-based pyramidal tiling; for hexagonal bases, hexagonal-based tilepyramides produce a honeycomb-like pattern.

Variants and uses: Tilepyramides can be combined with other polyhedral tiles to create complex mosaics or relief sculptures. The concept is of interest in tiling theory as a bridge between planar tilings and 3D polyhedral tilings; it also appears in architectural ornament and computer graphics as a modular toolkit.
