Tiisidlikäigukastid, also known as hydrostatic transmissions, are a type of continuously variable transmission (CVT) that uses hydraulic fluid to transmit power. Unlike traditional geared transmissions that rely on fixed gear ratios, hydrostatic transmissions offer an infinite range of ratios, allowing the engine to operate at its most efficient speed regardless of the vehicle's speed. This is achieved through a hydraulic pump driven by the engine, which pressurizes fluid and sends it to a hydraulic motor, which then drives the output shaft. The speed of the output shaft is controlled by varying the displacement of the pump and/or motor.

The primary advantage of hydrostatic transmissions is their smooth and stepless acceleration and deceleration. They can also provide excellent low-speed control and torque multiplication, making them ideal for applications requiring precise maneuvering or heavy loads. These transmissions are commonly found in heavy machinery such as tractors, construction equipment, and forklifts, as well as in some zero-turn lawnmowers and other specialized vehicles. While they offer benefits in terms of efficiency and control, hydrostatic transmissions can sometimes be less fuel-efficient than other transmission types at higher speeds and may require more maintenance due to the hydraulic components. The design allows for a very compact powertrain and eliminates the need for a clutch in many applications.
