tiedekunta

Tiedekunta is a major administrative subdivision of many Finnish universities, corresponding to what is called a faculty in English. It groups together related disciplines within a broad field, such as humanities, natural sciences, medicine, or social sciences, and is responsible for organizing education and research in its area.

A tiedekunta typically comprises several departments or institutes (laitokset) and may include research centers. It is led by a dekaani (dean) and supported by a tiedekuntaneuvosto (faculty council) that includes representatives from staff and students. The tiedekunta oversees degree programs offered within its fields, coordinates curricula and quality assurance at the faculty level, and manages resources allocated to its units, within the framework of the university's central administration.

In the Finnish university system, faculties operate under the umbrella of the university and collaborate with other faculties on cross-disciplinary programs. The exact number of tiedekunnat and their names vary by institution; common examples include the Faculty of Arts and Design, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Social Sciences, but names are language- and university-specific.

The term is rooted in the historical concept of a 'faculty' as a scholarly group within a university; in Finnish usage, tiedekunta is the standard term for this division. While most public universities use tiedekunta as a unit, some institutions may structure education and administration differently or change naming conventions.
