Thromboembolism refers to the blockage of a blood vessel by an embolus that has broken away from a thrombus. A thrombus is a blood clot that forms within a blood vessel or heart chamber. When a portion of this clot detaches and travels through the bloodstream, it is called an embolus. If this embolus lodges in a narrowed or smaller vessel, it can obstruct blood flow.

The consequences of thromboembolism depend on the location of the blockage. If a clot travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a serious condition that impairs the lungs' ability to oxygenate the blood. If it travels to the brain, it can lead to a stroke, resulting in neurological damage. Thromboembolism in the arteries of the limbs can cause peripheral artery occlusion, leading to pain, numbness, and potentially tissue death.

Risk factors for developing thrombi and subsequently experiencing thromboembolism include immobility, surgery, certain medical conditions like cancer and heart disease, genetic clotting disorders, and the use of some medications. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. Treatment aims to prevent further clot formation, dissolve existing clots, and manage underlying causes. Anticoagulant medications are commonly used to reduce the blood's clotting ability.
