The thoracolumbaal region typically encompasses the lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae, often cited as roughly from the twelfth thoracic vertebra (T12) to the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5). The region includes the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, their intervertebral discs, and the muscle groups that attach across this area, notably the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, and oblique abdominal muscles. The thoracolumbar fascia, a key component, forms a connective tissue envelope that helps organize and transmit forces between the upper and lower body and provides attachment sites for multiple muscles.

Thoracolumbar fascia and functional significance

The thoracolumbar fascia consists of multiple layers—anterior, middle, and posterior—that envelop the back muscles and extend toward the iliac crest and ribs.
