Third base is a base on the baseball diamond located at the left side of the infield, near the corner between the foul line and the outfield. It is defended by the third baseman and is designated as position 5 in the standard defensive lineup.

The third baseman's duties include fielding ground balls and bunts hit in the area, handling liners down the line, and making plays at first or home. They also cover third on steal attempts and coordinate with the shortstop and second baseman to defend the left side of the infield.

Effective third basemen typically combine quick reflexes, good range, and a strong throwing arm. The role is sometimes associated with power hitting as well as defense; notable players include Mike Schmidt, Brooks Robinson, Nolan Arenado, and Alex Rodriguez.
