therocephalia

Therocephalia is a clade of therapsids, a group of mammal-like reptiles within the larger Therapsida. The name, from Greek elements meaning “beast head,” reflects their distinctive skull features. Therocephalia belongs to Theriodontia, a major division of these mammal-like therapsids, and includes a wide range of Permian forms. Their fossil record spans from the Early Permian into the Early Triassic, with most diversity occurring during the Permian.

As predators and insectivores, therocephalians varied greatly in size and form. Many possessed elongated snouts and differentiated teeth, including prominent caniniform fangs and complex postcanine dentition. The skulls often show large temporal openings, and late representatives exhibit increasingly mammal-like features in skull and jaw anatomy, though they remained distinct from true mammals.

Key taxa include the type genus Therocephalus and other early forms such as Lycosuchus. The clade is best known from the Karoo Basin of South Africa, where much of the Permian therocephalian diversity is documented, although fossils have been found in other regions of the world, including parts of Russia and China.

Ecology and evolution within Therocephalia reflect a range of terrestrial lifestyles. They occupied diverse carnivorous and insectivorous niches, and their anatomical trends provide insight into the broader transition toward mammal-like features within Therapsida. Therocephalians are an important group for understanding the evolution of mammal ancestry outside the cynodont lineage.

Extinction: Most therocephalians disappeared by the end of the Permian, with only a few lineages persisting briefly into the Early Triassic before ultimately going extinct.
