Thalluksen is a linguistic term found chiefly in non-English, especially Finnish, scientific writing. It is the genitive form of thallus and is used to mean “of the thallus” in descriptions and phrases. In English-language biology, the standard term is thallus.

Thallus refers to the vegetative body of a non-vascular plant, certain algae, fungi, and lichens. It is typically undifferentiated and lacks the clearly specialized organs of higher plants, such as true roots, stems, and leaves, though some thalli show simple differentiation or regional specialization. Thalli can be filamentous, sheet-like, or lobed, and may bear reproductive structures on their surface. The concept is useful for describing organisms whose body plan does not fit a traditional plant-like hierarchy.

In fungi and lichens, the thallus is the main vegetative body. In lichens, the thallus arises from a symbiotic association between a fungal partner and one or more photosynthetic partners (green algae or cyanobacteria); the thallus embodies this integrated organism and carries its photosynthetic activity and reproductive features.

Etymology and usage: thallus comes from Latin thallus, itself from Greek thallos, meaning a green shoot or twig. The form thalluksen reflects how some languages inflect foreign scientific terms to fit native grammar, producing possessive or genitive constructions such as “thalluksen.”
