Testimonium is a Latin noun meaning "testimony" or "witness." It derives from testis, "witness," with the suffix -monium, and is a neuter noun of the second declension. The singular forms include testimonium (nominative/accusative), testimonii (genitive), testimonio (dative/ablative); the plural forms include testimonia (nominative/accusative) and testimoniis (dative/ablative), with testimoniorum (genitive). In broad use, a testimonium denotes a sworn statement, documentary evidence, or an attestation on a record.

In classical and administrative contexts, testimonium can refer to evidence or witness statements used to support claims, confirm acts, or certify the authenticity of documents or transactions. One of the most discussed instances in modern scholarship is the Testimonium Flavianum, a passage in Flavius Josephus’s Antiquities of the Jews that mentions Jesus. The consensus is that the core may reflect an authentic Josephus reference to Jesus, but substantial portions were added or altered by later editors.
