Termopilikanavat, often referred to as thermopile detectors, are infrared sensing devices that operate on the principle of thermoelectricity. They are designed to measure thermal radiation emitted by objects. When infrared radiation strikes the thermopile, it is absorbed by a series of thermocouples connected in series. Each thermocouple consists of two dissimilar metals joined at two junctions. The junctions are arranged such that one set is exposed to the incoming radiation (the hot junction), while the other set is kept at a constant reference temperature (the cold junction).

The absorbed infrared energy causes the hot junctions to heat up. This temperature difference between the hot and cold junctions generates a small voltage according to the Seebeck effect. The output voltage of the thermopile is directly proportional to the temperature difference, and thus to the intensity of the incident infrared radiation. This voltage can then be amplified and processed by electronic circuitry to determine the temperature of the source or to detect its presence.

Termopilikanavat are known for their robustness, wide operating temperature range, and relatively low cost. They do not require a power source to operate, beyond the output signal processing. Their applications are diverse, including non-contact thermometers, motion detectors, presence sensors, flame detectors, and in various industrial process control systems. The sensitivity and response time of a thermopile detector can be influenced by factors such as the number of thermocouples, the materials used, and the design of the absorber and housing.
