Termoparielementtiä, known in English as a thermocouple element, is a sensor used for measuring temperature. It functions based on the Seebeck effect, a thermoelectric phenomenon. When two dissimilar conductors are joined at two different temperatures, a voltage is produced that is proportional to the temperature difference. This voltage can then be measured and converted into a temperature reading.

The two dissimilar metals used in a thermocouple form a junction. One junction, the measuring junction, is placed at the point where the temperature is to be determined. The other junction, the reference junction, is kept at a known, constant temperature. The difference in temperature between these two junctions creates a small electromotive force (EMF) or voltage.

The choice of metals for the thermocouple element determines its temperature range and application. Common thermocouple types include Type K (chromel-alumel), Type J (iron-constantan), and Type T (copper-constantan), each with specific advantages for different environments and temperature scales. Thermocouples are widely used in industrial processes, scientific research, and various electronic devices due to their robustness, wide temperature range, and relatively low cost. They are a fundamental component in many temperature measurement systems.
