Tennenbutai is a term in Japanese Noh theater referring to the stage itself. It is a highly symbolic and stylized space, meticulously designed to facilitate the performance of Noh plays. The tennenbutai is typically a square platform with a roof supported by four pillars, known as the shite-bashira, tsuji-bashira, wakikata-bashira, and fue-bashira. These pillars are not merely structural; they also serve as visual cues for the actors, indicating specific positions and movements within the performance space.

A distinctive feature of the tennenbutai is the pine tree painted on the back wall, known as the kagami-ita. This pine tree is believed to represent a divine presence or a sacred connection to the spiritual realm. The stage also includes a bridge called the hashigakari, which connects the tennenbutai to a curtained area offstage called the kiri-do. The hashigakari is used by the main actor (shite) to enter and exit the stage, signifying their transition between the human and supernatural worlds.
