Temperatureequivalent is a term used in physics and engineering to denote a temperature value that corresponds to a non-temperature quantity according to a specified mapping or model. It is not a standard base quantity, but a contextual proxy that aids comparison or interpretation across different domains.

Conceptually, a temperatureequivalent arises when a quantity that is not itself a temperature is translated into a temperature using a defined relationship. For example, when relating energy to temperature in a system with known heat capacity, the temperatureequivalent change follows ΔT = ΔE / (m c), where m is mass and c is specific heat capacity. In radiometry and infrared thermography, the temperatureequivalent often takes the form of an apparent or brightness temperature: the temperature a blackbody would need to emit the observed radiance under the given conditions.

Another common approach uses the Stefan–Boltzmann law to map radiative flux to a temperatureequivalent T that satisfies P = σ A T^4, with σ denoting the Stefan–Boltzmann constant. Such conversions enable practical interpretation and cross-comparison, for example between energy measurements, radiative signals, and temperature-based specifications.

Limitations and caveats: the temperatureequivalent value depends on the chosen model, material properties, and geometry. It is not a direct measurement of the actual temperature and can be misleading if the underlying assumptions are not valid or if different conventions are used in different fields.
